OXIDATION DAMAGE

Proteins, lipids and DNA can be damaged as a result of oxidative stress, as dealt with in the e-lecture on oxidative stress under Oxidation damage
There are several possible biomarkers of oxidation damage to these molecules.
For oxidation damage to DNA, the possible biomarkers are strand breaks and oxidised bases.

8-oxoguanine - a marker of DNA oxidation

One form of DNA oxidation is the oxidised base 8-oxoguanine. This is potentially mutagenic because it may mis-pair with adenine instead of cytosine. This may be repaired by base excision repair (BER); see more details and animation in chapter 8.
